BABY NEST tutorial – free sewing pattern download

Hi all! 🙂

I am particularly pleased to present a small tutorial today: the baby nest. I have been told that this kind of “nests” are used a lot in Scandinavia. There are some companies that manufacture and sell them. For this reason it is quite difficult to find a sewing pattern for it.

I personally find it totally useful. Especially when the bed still seems so big at the beginning. As a small travel cot or to sleep between mom and dad. So very practical!

Material for the small baby nest (87 cm x 46 cm): – 1.00 m of your desired fabric 1.40 m wide – sufficient darning material (varies as desired) – 0.50 cm volume fleece (300 g / m) – 3.00 m Grosgrain ribbon, 3-4 cm wide – 3.50 m anorak cord – 2x stoppers for the cord

Material for the “baby nest for toddlers” (140 cm x 85 cm): – 2.00 m of your desired fabric 1.40 m wide – sufficient darning material (varies as desired) – 0.50 cm volume fleece (300 g / m) – 3 , 50 m grosgrain ribbon, 3-4 cm wide – 4.0 m anorak cord – 2x stoppers for the cord

Step 1: cut the fabric with the sewing pattern

As is so common when sewing, you must first lay the paper cut on and cut it. My little tip: I drew the baby nest pattern on the fabric with a water-soluble trick marker. There is e.g. on Buttinette.com. The line disappears as soon as the fabric comes into contact with water. Transfer all the markings from the pattern to the fabric.

Next you put the two pieces of fabric on top of each other on the right. Make sure to insert the needles in the sewing direction. I personally work with needles a lot. This guarantees you accuracy and hold. In this case, you even make sure that the baby nest gets a good shape.

Now you use your line to sew the two parts of the baby nest together. The entire lower part of the nest remains open. Sewing is only done up to the middle (marked in the picture below with a needle) of the two legs.

Next, cut all the curves of the baby’s nest with small scissors. When you have done this, turn the baby nest to the right and iron it thoroughly first.

Step 2: Sewing on the grosgrain ribbon at the baby nest

You now sew the drawstring on the central seam of the already existing nest. So basically the middle of the tape lies on the seam. You sew it on the left and right, so that a tunnel is created, in which you later thread the cord to pull it together. At both ends of the grosgrain ribbon, take an inch and fold it over. So you sew it on. A clean finish is created. The tape goes approximately in the middle of the two side parts of the baby nest (see marking above). It looks something like this:

Then you topstitch the lying surface and fill the edges with normal darning material and the lying surface with the volume fleece of your choice. The bed surface is quilted 8 cm apart (depending on taste and mood). The main thing is to topstitch the lying surface so that the volume fleece stays where it is.

Step 3: Final steps

In the end you sew everything you left open at the bottom of the baby nest. Now pull the cord through the tunnel (this step can be done before filling with cotton). You use a large safety pin to pull through. Fasten it to one end of the cord and then pull it, safety pin ahead, piece by piece through the tunnel.

And that’s how it could look like! 🙂
